Events
We meet most months at the United Church Hall, Herne Hill, London SE24 (top of Red Post Hill) – bus routes 68, 468, 42 and P4 pass close by. Meetings are on the second Wednesday of each month, with a break for summer, starting at 7:45 pm. Speakers give illustrated talks on a wide range of topics, usually on local issues.
These meetings are free and open to the public - anyone may come along. Recent topics have included: the history of the cinema, the story of a Lambeth midwife in the 1930s and 40s, and an illustrated tour of Southwark. To find out about our forthcoming events, go to the Events and Meetings page.

Where is Herne Hill?
Herne Hill is the part of south London defined, principally, by the SE24 postal district. It includes parts of the London Boroughs of Lambeth and Southwark, and is bounded by Camberwell to the north, Brixton and Streatham to the west, Dulwich to the east, and Tulse Hill and Norwood to the south.
What we do
Founded in 1982, we are the local amenity group covering the area. The Society is run by a Committee of volunteers elected by the members and well supported by local residents and traders. Our aim is to improve and maintain the quality of the amenities, facilities and environment of the Herne Hill area for the benefit of residents, visitors, local businesses and trades-people.
We do this by
* promoting high standards of local planning, architecture, transport and other facilities
* exploring the area’s geography, history and natural history
* encouraging the preservation, protection, development and improvement of features of historic or public interest
We have helped set up and work closely with other local organisations devoted to improving and maintaining the area. These include
* The Friends of Brockwell Park
* The Friends of Carnegie Library
* The Herne Hill Forum
* The Friends of Ruskin Park

Publications and Bookshop
Our quarterly newsletter covers issues of local interest and is sent free to members. (You can download sample copies.) We have an active Local History Group whose publications include “Herne Hill Heritage Trail" (sold out), “Herne Hill Personalities" and, most recently, “Milkwood Estate".
We also carry an extensive range of publications for sale. It is probably the most extensive list of books, maps and other items about Herne Hill and the surrounding areas. See our complete list of titles on the Publications page.
